Milwaukee is the site of one of the original three National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers authorized by legislation and signed by President Abraham Lincoln. Now known as the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, this historic site is host to Reclaiming Our Heritage, an annual event sponsored by the Soldiers Home Foundation *.
This free-admission, family-friendly event is held annually the weekend after Memorial Day. Reclaiming Our Heritage honors veterans and educates the public about veterans' contributions to, and sacrifices for, American society. More Information... *

Under previous eligibility rules, combat veterans who served in a theater of combat operations after November 11, 1998 were eligible to be enrolled in Priority Group 6 and receive cost-free health care for two years after discharge for conditions potentially related to combat service

The Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center is located on 125
acres on the western edge of Milwaukee. The Medical Center delivers primary,
secondary, and tertiary medical care in 166 acute operating beds and provides
467,900 visits annually through an extensive outpatient program. The nursing
home care unit of 113 beds offers geriatric programming and the 356 domiciliary
beds are the locus of programs in Substance Abuse Rehabilitation, Psychiatric
Rehabilitation and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder care. More...
