Milwaukee VA schedules opening of expanded Emergency Department

November 27, 2018

The Milwaukee Veterans Affairs Medical Center will hold a ribbon cutting and give tours of its expanded Emergency Department, 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, in the south entrance.

There will be a 20-minute ceremony followed by tours until 12:45 p.m. The expanded Emergency Department opens for patients the following day.

The Emergency Department will expand from 11 to 19 beds for emergencies and urgent issues, with two rooms specially designed for mental health care. The expansion was designed to optimize care and allow staff to nearly double the number of patients seen at one time.

Guest speakers at the event will be Dr. Ian B.K. Martin, professor and system chairman for the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin; and Ken Wasemiller, owner of Progressive Construction Services and the senior project manager.

Wasemiller is a disabled veteran who served in the Army as a heavy equipment operator. He was involved in a car crash while in the service which required doctors to reconstruct his hip. He later had a complete hip replacement at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center. He credits his career as a contractor and his business to VA’s vocational rehabilitation programs which helped him earn a bachelor’s degree in construction management from the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

For more information on the ceremony, call Public Affairs at 414-384-2000, ext. 45363.
